The Cinque Ports Lindy Hoppers have been dancing together as a troupe since December 15 2001, when they first danced synchronised, choreographed Lindy Hop at a local swing dance. Originally founded by “Gypsy” John Newson and Carol Elsmore. Since the troupe began there have been 30 dancers involved, and currently the full troupe can be viewed below in their Havana cocktail waiter outfits. They regularly dance freestyle and routines all over the country and are available for weddings, carnivals, festivals and other such functions. They have appeared as extras on the feature film Piccadilly Jim and were the featured dancers on the BBC’s Hellfire Corner screened early in 2005. They can supply their own 24ft x 8ft stage, music and a variety of authentic vintage clothing. Highlights to date include 3 different couples from the troupe picking up two 1st’ and one 2nd in the swing dance competition at the War & Peace show, Paddock Wood, Kent, and dancing on stage with the Jiving Lindy Hopper’s in Jitterbug Joe at the Glenn Miller festival, Clapham, Bedfordshire. They have also appeared at Her Majesty’s theatre, London, The London Palladium and danced for Vera Lynn at her 91st birthday party.
